Quilting and Appliqué Classes

QUILTING

Basic Heirloom Machine Quilting
Harriet is known internationally as the originator of the machine quilting revolution in the early 1980’s. Her book Heirloom Machine Quilting created a new era in quilting. Harriet’s teaching skills, and your desire to master the technique, can turn you into an excellent machine quilter. This two-day class – made up of lectures, demos and hands-on practice time – gives you plenty of time to grasp the techniques… and you are quilting feathers by 3pm on the 2nd day! Promise! Please be sure to make arrangements so that you do not have to leave class early.

Quilter’s Academy Machine Quilting
If anyone can teach you to machine quilt, Harriet can! Harriet has been teaching this class nationally and internationally for more than 30 years. Her book Heirloom Machine Quilting is the best selling text on machine quilting and is now in its 4th edition. In this class, you will begin with an in-depth discussion of supplies, including needles and threads, quilt preparation and your workspace. Then it is on to the stitching techniques of ditch quilting and free-motion quilting. You will end the class with a discussion investigating the secrets of batting and starting a library of batting samples and learning about binding and different quilting ideas.
* Please note: Session I is a pre-requisite for this class.

Quilting Academy Student ONLY 6 students Minimum

Consulting with Harriet
Spend a day with Harriet and your quilt tops trying to decide what type of quilting would make your quilt top a knock out, but quilted within your skill level. Batting choices, thread choices, and design will be discussed, as well as walking through the actual step-by-step process of getting the quilt to the machine and what to quilt first, second, third, etc. Thursday Apr 29 10-4:30pm

Hand Quilting
Learn the basics of fine hand quilting from a well known hand quilter. This time honored skill is relaxing and fun! Kathy will discuss and demonstrate several techniques, tools and materials while you work on a small sampler. Some pre-class prep work is required.

APPLIQUE

Invisible Machine Appliqué
This is Harriet’s instant gratification class! Mock hand appliqué looks like the finest hand appliqué but is achieved with a sewing machine. You can walk out of class knowing that you can appliqué anything your heart desires!

Satin & Buttonhole Stitch Appliqué
Enjoy learning true, professional techniques for beautiful machine appliqué. The latest products will be covered, as well as tried and true methods for achieving perfect appliqué by machine. Come and learn the tips and tricks to make your satin stitching beautiful and your blanket stitch/ buttonhole stitch flawless!

Pine Needles
In this class, you will make one of McKenna Ryan’s Pine Needles Art Quilts. We will discuss fabric selection, using fusibles, and how to cut and layer your art quilt wall hanging. You will have a good start on your small masterpiece- as well as all the knowledge to tackle any other fusible appliqué project at the end of class. Lots of tips and tricks for making your beautiful work of art a little easier will be given.

Hand Appliqué
Learn to appliqué using a variety of techniques. You will learn needle turn making your own templates from freezer paper and a self-adhesive laminate. You will also learn gluing, starching and finger pressing. Kathy will assist students to perfect their invisible appliqué stitch.
